Static Electricity

The human body accumulates 10 mJ (milliJoules) of energy when charged to only 10,000 V (Volts) by static electricity. Discharge of static electricity into a vapor-air mixture can cause a fire or an explosion under some circumstances. Static electrical build-up occurs following the contact and separation of materials. This can include the pouring of liquids and movement of powdered solids. Static energy of 0.5 mJ can ignite many flammable mixtures under the right conditions.
